Rated 1 out of 5 by from Look for a different course. I give this course a very mixed review: On the positive side, Dr, Atchison clearly knows his topic. His information on how to structure arguments, engage in debate, frame rebuttals, and compensate for strong opposing views is well thought out. Unfortunately, he is steeped in all the current flavors of woke politics sweeping the campuses. He presents his political views as if they are undisputed reality, while straw-manning views to the contrary with weak, and in some cases, non-sensical arguments. The facts presented, both for the affirming and negating sides are superficial, but this may be due to the course content drawing from freshmen student unskilled in research. Regretfully, I cannot recommend this course, which is a brilliant topic ruined beyond recovery by infuriatingly bad examples.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Take the Title Seriously Make no mistake: this is a course on formal debate, so make sure that is what you are interested in. I think I was more interested in argument. I've bought a course on that topic but have not yet watched it. Dr. Atchison stresses how these techniques can be brought to a less formal setting, such as making decisions at the workplace, but after working for 40 years in industry, it is hard to see anything more than the general concepts being applied. All that said, Dr. Atchison is passionate, knowledgeable, and engaging enough as a presenter. I learned a lot, even if it was not was I was after initially. Certainly, take this course if you want to learn about debate.

Dr. Jarrod Atchison is an Associate Professor of Communication at Wake Forest University, where he teaches such courses as Argumentation Theory and Debate and Advocacy. He is also the Director of Debate for the Wake Forest University Debate Team, which dates back to 1835 and has won multiple national championships. Dr. Atchison received his Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Georgia, where he served as an assistant debate coach. As an undergraduate at Wake Forest University, Dr. Atchison was a Presidential Scholar in debate who was ranked the third overall individual speaker at the 2001 National Debate Tournament.

Dr. Atchison has published extensively on the study of argumentation and rhetoric and is the author of a forthcoming book on the rhetorical leadership of Jefferson Davis. He researches 19th-century American public address, with an emphasis on the American Civil War. Additionally, Dr. Atchison researches public argument, including the best practices for intercollegiate debate. Dr. Atchison has been nominated twice for the Reid-Doyle Prize for Excellence in Teaching at Wake Forest University and was honored with the George Ziegmueller Award by the National Debate Tournament Board of Trustees in 2015. In the summer, Dr. Atchison works with high school students on the art of debate and was consistently voted the top-ranked lecturer at the University of Michigan summer debate workshop.
